Compared to standard PVC, the CPVC used to make these CPVC True Union Ball Valve is more suitable for hot water applications (up to 179.6°F). Q: PVC vs. CPVC: which is best for my project?

A: PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) and CPVC (Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride) are similar in many ways: both are highly versatile thermoplastics and they are resistant to many of the same chemicals. The crucial difference: CPVC is compositionally enhanced by a chlorination reaction that allows the material to withstand a far wider range of temperatures than PVC. Most building codes require the use of CPVC as opposed to PVC for use in hot water applications. PVC is generally prohibited by law in potable water systems with temperatures exceeding 140°F, whereas our CPVC valves boast a working temperature up to 179.6°F.

Q: Is this valve Schedule 40 or Schedule 80?

A: Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 are measures of wall thickness for PIPE and FITTINGS.  Different Schedules means different wall thicknesses, pressure ratings, applications & usage, and color.  These standards DO NOT APPLY to valves which have O-rings, seats, and other seals.  Valves are rated for PRESSURE at a WORKING TEMPERATURE and in this case Red Flag Products valves meet or exceed the industry standard 150PSI @ 73° F and CAN be used with BOTH Schedule 40 (White) AND Schedule 80 (Gray) pipe.

 

Q: Which valve is most appropriate for my specific project?  Light-Duty Compact Ball Valve, Standard Compact Ball Valve, Single or True Union Ball Valve, Butterfly Valve, or something else?

A: We are happy to assist you in making a decision when it comes to selecting between similar models of products.  Selecting the correct parts is a crucial step in ensuring the success of your fluid handling system.  General variables to consider are the following: Exposure to the elements, exposure to direct sunlight, duration of use, desired impact resistance, budget, durability, frequency of use, weight, required water flow, and integrity of system design.  WE RECOMMEND PVC TRUE UNION BALL VALVES FOR THE MOST DEMANDING INSTALLATIONS.

 

Q: What is the difference between Socket and Threaded end connections?

A: Socket x Socket end connections mean that both sides of the valve have a smooth inner wall that will slip onto pipe of the same size.  Also known as Slip or Solvent end connections, this version of valve should be used with a recommended PVC glue and primer to ensure a watertight, leak-free installation.

Thread x Thread end connections mean that both sides of the valve have a threaded inner wall that will twist onto threaded pipe.  Threaded seal tape should be used to ensure a watertight and leak-free use rather than PVC glue or primer. 

For installations that will not be changed or taken apart at a later time socket end connections are generally preferable as all parts in the system are bonded together through the application of glue and primer.  Should the installation be temporary or if changes will be made at a later time, threaded parts may be preferred due to their ability to disassemble and amend without increased construction costs, cutting out of pipe, fittings, and valves, or need for PVC glue and primer.

 

Q: How easy or hard is it to turn your valve handles once they are installed and operational?

A: Red Flag Products has a long track record or precision manufacturing, high quality materials, and experienced technical engineers that ensure finely crafted products.

Compact Ball Valves and their handles are one quality level and the True Union Ball Valves are another.  Relative to other brands our Compact Ball Valves, Red Flag Products has very high standards.  Our Compact Ball Valve series of MOLDED IN PLACE valves are easy to turn, smooth, and do not get stuck in place.  SINGLE and TRUE UNION BALL VALVES are our EASIEST quarter-turn valves and are designed with to be adjustable.  Tension between the internal ball and seats CAN BE ADJUSTED to guarantee a great seal and an easy turn. 

Ensure a smooth quarter-turn on/off that does not require excess force or tools yet remains watertight and leak-free.

 

Q: My experience with other brands and manufacturers is that valve handles break necessitating repairs and additional construction costs, have your valves experienced this issue?

A: To improve duration and reduce maintenance costs Red Flag Products engineers have incorporated several advanced features into the manufacturing of our valves. 

Virgin resin is used in the manufacturing of our valves whereas other brands use recycled material containing impurities and blemishes that can cause premature failure to occur.  All Ball Valves now come with fully replaceable handles so that in the event of a break the handle can quickly and easily be replaced – Pop off the handle and slide on a replacement handle (Approx. replacement time required: 30 seconds).  Single and True Union Ball Valves come with reinforced handles that boast increased strength and added torque above and beyond PVC Light-Duty and Standard Compact Ball Valves.

We recommend the following additional steps to ensure duration of use: ONLY hand operation, no use of tools or wrenches.  Valves exposed to direct sunlight should be painted in accordance with recommended industry standards to prevent UV damage from long-term use.  Determine which valve is most appropriate for your installation, we offer a range of qualities and products including Light-Duty Compact Ball Valves, Standard Compact Ball Valves, Single Union Ball Valves, True Union Ball Valves, Butterfly Valves, and much more.

 

Q: How long do the internal O-rings, seats, stem, and rotating ball last before the valve will begin leaking? 

A: Several factors contribute to the degradation of PVC valves and their internal component parts.  Constant opening and closing or use of water containing heavy particle concentrations causes wear and tear.  For customers concerned by demanding specification requirements or an aversion to future repairs we highly recommend our True Union Ball Valve since it is serviceable in two distinct ways:

  1. The valve body can be replaced in full by simply opening the unions and dropping in a new unit. 
  2. The valve body can be opened up and ALL INTERNAL PARTS CAN BE FULLY REPLACED.  To do so, pop out the gray insert fitting (Wrench) located in the handle > back out the internal locking mechanism > open up the valve and replace everything from the O-rings to the valve stem and even the internal rotating ball. 

Additionally, while other True Union Ball Valve that begin leaking must be replaced Red Flag Products version is different.  Often times the leak is the result of worn down seats due to years of friction.  In such a case, tension can be added between the internal rotating ball and the seats by using the insert fitting (wrench) located in the handle.  This amazing feature ensures the seat is tightened down against the ball and a water tight seal can be reestablished.
